Considering that the Windows 10 operating system comes with Microsoft Defender built-in, many users are wondering whether they need to install another antivirus on their operating system in 2021, with all the updates that the company has introduced over the years.
Windows 10 comes with its Defender software at no extra cost. It allows users to use Windows Hello, facial recognition and biometric logins, along with comprehensive antivirus protection. One of its big advantages is that there is no need to download this extra security feature, as Microsoft Defender comes as standard in Windows 10.
Microsoft is proud of its product
The Redmond giant wants to convince that its security software is more than enough to protect Windows 10-based computers. It should be noted that Microsoft ensures that the computer’s performance is not impaired by Windows Defender activity, which is not the case with other antivirus software, where running tasks in the background causes the operating system to suffer. Microsoft says this on its product page:
“Microsoft Defender Antivirus provides comprehensive, continuous, real-time protection against software threats, such as viruses, malware and spyware, across email, apps, the cloud and the Internet.”
Although this security software can be turned off, many people prefer not to do so simply due to lack of time or lack of computer skills.
Advantages of Microsoft Defender
In addition to the fact that it comes fully integrated into Windows 10, among its main strengths we find that it has an interface that is perfectly integrated with the operating system, as it is part of it, and good performance in its threat detection.
Thanks to being integrated, Defender is one of the lightest things we can use in Windows 10 to protect us.
It does not include any advertising, is updated almost daily to keep up to date with the latest threats, and has real-time and cloud-based protection, automatic sample sending, protection against computer tampering, analysis of malicious applications or access control to your folders to prevent ransomware.
In addition to this, the Redmond-based company strives to keep updating Defender to improve its capabilities over time and made it available for Android systems.
Last January, AV Comparatives launched its study on the best antivirus products on the market, and although Microsoft Defender was on the shortlist, the winners were the products of AVG and Avast. It is worth noting that both are free solutions.
In general, when comparing Microsoft Defender with other free antivirus software, the quality is similar. Its quality is acceptable, although it is not the best option against malware, where it is outperformed by the antivirus products Avira Free Security Suite, Avast Free Antivirus, Bitdefender Antivirus Free Edition and AVG Free Antivirus.
Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Defender
Another issue to bear in mind is that, although Windows Defender is sufficient for those users who use their computer in a very basic way, it should be remembered that, like any other software program, it can have its flaws. A month ago Microsoft announced a fix for a vulnerability in Windows Defender / Microsoft Defender that allowed potential attackers to gain administrator permissions on Windows systems.
This did not only affect Microsoft’s antivirus, but also other security products from the company that make use of the Malware Protection Engine: Microsoft Endpoint Protection, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc.
In addition to the free antivirus products, which are generally useful for the average user who does not do a lot of work with their computer, there are also the paid options. And, in this case, they do include, for the most part, many more advanced functions for professional environments in various professions.
