Apple introduced Apple Arcade last March. It’s a platform to download more than a hundred games, play games on all the brand’s devices and save our progress in the cloud. Apple Arcade will be released this fall in more than 150 countries.
This apple-branded “Netflix of video games” will feature titles from many developers, including SEGA, Konami, PlatinumGames, Disney, Sumo Digital, LEGO and Cartoon Network. But those from Cupertino want exclusivity and are willing to pay for it.
Apple already said the project was very important for them and they would invest the millions that were necessary. The information given by the Financial Times confirms this. According to sources close to the project, Apple is investing nearly 500 million dollars in Apple Arcade.
This is not new: many developers are financing their video games with exclusive agreements with this or that platform, console or company. Thus, with part of those 500 million dollars, Tim Cook’s company wants to sign exclusivity agreements with many of them. The basic idea is that whoever signs receives money in exchange for committing to have their title in Apple Arcade and not in Google’s Android Play Store.
Apple wants the exclusive to play on mobile phones. Those titles could reach desktop consoles but not an Android mobile. This is the case of Shantae 5, which is already announced for Apple Arcade, but also for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
