Sandvine, a Canadian company focused on broadband connections, has published a report called Global Internet Phenomena, in which companies and services that use the highest Internet bandwidth are listed. As expected, the companies focused on streaming video cope the list and Netflix stands out above the rest: more specifically, it is the company that generates the most data traffic, with 14.97% of the total.

Companies focused on video streaming dominate the traffic table, up to 58% of bandwidth: to almost 15% of Netflix we must add the consumption of streaming multimedia HTTP (13.07%), YouTube (11, 35%) or web browsing (7.8%). Amazon and Facebook are next on the list.

It is clear that video consumption reigns on the Internet according to the Sandvine report. And, in case the Netflix number was not impressive in itself, the report states that the VOD giant has a video coding system more efficient than its competitor with what, in other words, the consumption of data of the brand could be significantly higher.

Perhaps the most unknown name, with a greater consumption of data, for the mainstream audience is Openload, one of the most well-known file storage websites on the Internet. With 0.8% of total consumption, Openload generates more data traffic than popular streaming services such as HBO Go or Hulu. The reason? It is the choice of many users to store and share illegitimate copies of movies and television series, generating millions of views around the world. As stated in the report itself, it is more than possible that the fact that this service is the eighth largest in the world in terms of data consumption “does not make the studios and producers happy”.

Similarly, an old service like BitTorrent seems to continue to have a strong presence in data consumption but, in this case, with a greater weight of upload traffic. Everything points to piracy still having a great weight in global data traffic despite the fact that, at the same time, streaming services such as Netflix or HBO Go do nothing but grow year by year.
