Brazil registered 1,185 deaths from the new coronavirus on the last day, bringing the total number of deaths to 53,830, while the number of confirmed cases increased by 42,725, the government reported Wednesday.

The Health Ministry reported in its daily bulletin that the confirmed cases of COVID-19 now stand at 1,188,631 in the country, the second most affected by the pandemic after the United States.

The number of patients recovered rose to 649,908, or 54.7% of the total.

However, according to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Brazil, with 210 million inhabitants, is currently the country with the highest number of infections (about 220,000) and deaths (7,312) if only the last seven days are counted.
