A DNA test has confirmed that Jan Karbaat, a doctor and former director of a sperm bank in the Netherlands who died in 2007, would have inseminated at least 49 women with his own sperm.

A statement from Defence for Children explains that the gynaecologist used his own semen instead of that of the donors.

These 49 cases are in addition to the 22 biological children Karbaat had with his three wives.

The case caused a stir in February when a Dutch court decided that Karbaat’s DNA samples should be made available to parents and their children for DNA testing.
