Canva is a design platform that was born in 2013 from the hand of the young Melanie Perkins. Seven years later, this portal is a company that competes with the giants of the world of technology and is valued at 3.2 billion dollars, with Perkins being one of the founders of the youngest ‘technological unicorns’ in the world.
Back in 2006, Perkins and the future co-founder of Canva and her current fiancé, Cliff Obrecht, were teaching other students at the university about design. They all gave back the same feedback: that the platforms offered by Microsoft or Adobe to design were extremely complicated.
“That people had to spend a whole semester learning where the buttons were on the programs was ridiculous,” Perkins says in an interview on CNBC. So, with simplicity and accessibility in mind, the seed for Canva began to take shape, and today it has helped create nearly 2 billion designs in 190 different countries.
Canva’s co-founder – and tech icon in Australia – has been named to Forbes’ list of the top under-30 founders of the decade, along with such figures as Mark Zuckerberg, Spotify founder Daniel Ek, and Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.
