There have been several reports published stating that Qualcomm’s flagship SoC, Snapdragon 820 is going to be fabricated on Samsung’s 14 nm FinFET process. Additionally, there were also reports suggesting that the company was going to discard its Krait cores and replace them with more efficient and capable Kyro cores. Now, thanks to Mobile-Dad, we now that Snapdragon 820 is going to feature the aforementioned cores, but here’s the astounding fact about them; they are going to be running at a clock speed of 3.0 GHz, which is nothing short of impressive.
Snapdragon 820 Will Be Implemented In To Devices In Q4, 2015, Assuming No Issues Are Faced
For Qualcomm, Snapdragon 810 is a story that the company wants to forget instantaneously. In addition to overheating to the point that mobile applications crash, Snapdragon 810 also clocks down its CPU to the extent that a Snapdragon 801 is able to outperform it in gaming applications. With Snapdragon 820’s superior architecture, it is expected that overheating and thermal throttling events will be the least of the company’s worries.
If everything seems to go in order, then we could be seeing Snapdragon 820 running handsets as early as Q4, 2015. We have already witnessed the capabilities of Snapdragon 620, and since it is able to beat chipsets like Exynos 7420 and Snapdragon 810 in single-core tests, we should expect the same prowess from Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship SoC.
It is expected that Snapdragon 820 is going to feature an octa-core processor, with all eight cores belonging to the company’s Kyro architecture. The biggest jump thanks to switching the architecture has to come from the high clock speed difference. The Chinese website states that the clock speed of the Kyro core will be running at 3.0 GHz, which is phenomenal. However, one critical question left unanswered was will all eight cores running at the same frequency or not?
Looks like we are going to have to wait for the answer when we see the first batch of smartphones feature Snapdragon 820. Let us hope Qualcomm learned effectively from its mistakes.
