Sega has announced the launch of the Game Gear Micro, a retro mini console commemorating his 60th birthday and the 30th birthday of the historic handheld with which he stood up to Nintendo’s dominant Game Boy.
With dimensions of 80 x 43 x 20 mm, its size has shrunk to less than 40 % of the original model. Its LCD screen has also been reduced, now measuring 1.15 inches (3.2 inches in classic hardware) and powered by two AAA batteries instead of the six AA in the past.
The microUSB connection is only used initially to provide electricity, not to transmit data. The console comes with a collection of four fixed games that will depend on the color chosen, so it is a pure collector’s item.
This will be the ROM for each model.
Game Gear Micro black:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Puyo Puyo 2
- Out Run
- Royal Stone
Game Gear Micro blue:
- Sonic Chaos
- Gunstar Heroes
- Sylvan Tale
- Baku Baku Animal
Game Gear Micro red:
- Revelations: The Demon Slayer
- Megami Tensei Gaiden: Last Bible Special
- The GG Shinobi
Game Gear Micro yellow:
- Shining Force Gaiden: Ensei – Jashin no Kuni he
- Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya
- Shining Force Gaiden: Final Conflict
- Nazopuyo Aruru no Ru
Next to the console, Sega will revive its old magnifying glass to expand the size of the game surface. According to the official product description, this peripheral will be included as standard if the complete collection is purchased with all four colours.
The Game Gear Micro will first arrive in Japan on October 6th, but no further details have been given as to how and when it will reach other markets.
