The World Video Game Hall of Fame is the video game version of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. New (old) titles are added each year.
In 2019 a discreet, simple, but very popular game, present in millions of computers, has deserved such an honour. We are talking about Microsoft Windows Solitaire, that is, the game of Solitaire; a title carried by all PCs that work with the Microsoft operating system.
This simple card game debuted on computers 29 years ago and is estimated to have been played by about 500 million users. That being so, and despite its simplicity, it seems that it deserved to enter the Video Game Hall of Fame.
Three other titles also make it this 2019: Mortal Kombat, Super Mario Kart and Colossal Cave Adventure. According to the National Museum of Play, which is responsible for managing this Olympus of the best video games in history, these four titles “significantly influenced the video game industry, popular culture and society in general”. That’s why they enter the Video Game Hall of Fame.
Legendary video games such as Final Fantasy VII, Grand Theft Auto III, Legend of Zelda, Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Bros., Tetris, Tomb Raider and World of Warcraft are already in this hall of the best games. This year were nominated but have not received the prize, titles like Sid Meier’s Civilization, Half-Life or Myst.
