With PlayStation 5 on track for the end of the year, one of the most talked about topics is the console’s SSD and its memory architecture. At Epic Games, those who used the console to create their impressive Unreal Engine 5 technical demo have had no hesitation in praising the technology of PS5. In the past, Tim Sweeney has compared it to high-end PCs, and now Nick Penwarden has done so, calling PS5 a “masterpiece” in its own right.
In an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine, the Vice President of Engineering at Epic Games gave his thoughts on the Sony console, saying: The PlayStation 5 is a masterpiece of system design. Not only does it drive a quantum leap in graphics and computing performance, but it is also revolutionary in terms of storage and data compression technology, enabling new types of games and experiences for gamers to enjoy.
Epic’s CTO, Kim Libreri, spoke in general terms about the next generation of consoles, promising new gameplay concepts that were not possible before: The next-generation graphics and processing power will not only make games more immersive, but also enable new gameplay concepts that can take advantage of fully dynamic environments and lighting, greatly enhanced physics, smarter AI and richer multiplayer experiences.
