Minecraft says NO to NFTs and bans blockchain technology in Minecraft client
Minecraft refuses NFTs outright: it doesn’t consider them fun and bans blockchain technology on the game servers.
NFTs are the future, according to many companies in the tech industry and naturally, also in video games. But NOT for Mojang, NOT for Minecraft.
Several of the big publishers, such as Ubisoft or Square Enix, have already talked about their plans to use NFTs in games, while other “NFT indies” also present their projects as Web3 consoles.
But Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, the most played game in history and the most influential game of this decade, shuts down NFTs and blockchain technology outright, in a statement where they defend their stance (and it’s full of arguments against NFTs).
Seeking to answer common questions from the community about their opinion on non-fungible tokens, particularly for those players or creators interested in creating, buying or selling NFTs that use the Minecraft brand (such as skins or worlds), Mojang makes it clear that NFTs are not something they will support or allow.
They add an outright shutdown on NFTs: “They cannot be used to create NFTs associated with any content in the game, including worlds, masks, personal items, or other modifications.”
Mojang gives their reasons for rejecting NFTs: “NFTs are not inclusive of our entire community and create a haves and have-nots scenario.”
They also mention the risks of speculation and fraud associated with many NFT cases. “The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs diverts attention away from the game and encourages speculation, which we believe is incompatible with the long-term enjoyment and success of our players.”
The rejection by Minecraft, one of the world’s most popular games, of NFTs is a setback that joins the one handed to it by PlayStation this week, when it openly dismissed the use of NFTs for some digital rewards in its new PlayStation Stars program.
