The type of gameplay in Animal Crossing: New Horizons and the confinement have meant that the Nintendo Switch game has sold 50% of its copies in digital format, according to Nintendo. This is a very high percentage achieved in an exceptional setting, so the Japanese company doesn’t think that this situation will be sustained over time. However, it does expect sales in digital format to rise after many players have discovered its convenience.
“The Animal Crossing saga is suitable to be played in digital format, and we believe that the timing of its launch, which coincided with an increase in requests to stay at home, resulted in some consumers choosing the digital version,” said Shuntaro Furukawa, president of Nintendo, during a question and answer session with shareholders and investors. “We believe that this high percentage [of 50 %] is due to these unique factors.
“Moreover, after consumers have experienced the convenience of digital downloads, they may tend to continue to choose this option in the future, so we believe that overall the percentage of digital sales will increase,” Furukawa added. During the fiscal year ending 31 March 2020, Nintendo’s digital sales rose by 71.8% and the new Animal Crossing is one of the biggest contributors to this increase.
