We shared with you some screenshots of the leaked Windows 10 10149 build earlier last week. 10149 build brought in some major changes to Microsoft Edge browser moving it to the bottom of the screen and adding features for Mobile and Desktop viewing. However, it is not the browser that we are talking about today but Android.
What Android, you ask? Microsoft has apparently hidden an “entire” Android subsystem in the Windows 10 10149 build update package. Remember, Microsoft had announced Project Astoria helping developers easily port Android code to help them bring apps to Windows. Not only porting, but Astoria also allows them to even reuse Android code just to make the process easier for developers. While until now we only had a demo of how that worked, seems like things are shaping up now.
Windows 10 Android code reuse support:
According to testers, some 100MB out of the approximate 300MB main operating system package is dedicated to a package called projecta. This Projecta package contains a few Dynamic Link Libraries (DLLs) and the framework of the Astoria-referenced Android-on-Windows apps also containing Android file system too. This Android on Windows subsystem can be found under System32 and includes an OpenGLES translator.
The most interesting part of this is that it also contains an Android file system containing some tools like adbd, the Android Debugger Daemon and both native and Hyper-V drivers.Advertisements
It is uncertain if this package is included in all the 10149 or not. If so, it is highly likely that Microsoft may be launching them as an update in the upcoming Windows 10 insider builds. Devs must be super excited!
Microsoft is officially launching Windows 10 on July 29 making it exactly a month away from us. With new Insider build expected this week, we are going to see a lot of bug fixes and improvements to user experience from now on. However, we won’t stop looking for more new features and insider gems like this one. Stay tuned!
